Why I Built MetaMood
MetaMood is the app I wish I had when I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder type 2 in 2016.
Mental health treatment is complex. Many factors influence how we feel. Early on, I did not understand those factors. I learned through years of trial and error how diet, sleep, medication, exercise, and daily habits shaped my mood.
That process was painful. It affected me and the people around me. I built MetaMood to help shorten that journey for others.
A Better Way to Find What Works
MetaMood helps you discover what works for you in a comprehensive and intuitive way. The goal is simple. Maximize the time between episodes. Detect early warning signs. Involve providers before symptoms become disruptive.
The Problem With Existing Tools
I used multiple apps to track my health. I logged mood notes in Evernote. I tracked sleep and exercise in Fitbit. I managed prescriptions in my doctor’s app.
None of these tools worked together. Worse, none were designed for mental health.
They were missing critical features:
- Evernote does not support structured mood ratings from 0 to 5.
- It does not track common symptoms of bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety, or schizophrenia.
- Most tools do not graph mood ratings over time, making instability hard to see or share.
- Fitbit does not track difficulty falling asleep, a common early sign of mania.
- My doctor’s app does not let me record medication side effects to review later with my psychiatrist.
One Central Place for Mental Health Tracking
MetaMood brings everything together in one place. It includes features designed specifically for mental health conditions. It helps you see connections across all the factors that influence how you feel.
With MetaMood, you can:
- Rate your mood from 0 to 5
- Track common symptoms like irritability, anxiety, depression, hypersexuality, and energy changes
- Monitor difficulty falling asleep over time
- Record medication side effects as they happen
- View trends and patterns across all your data
Better Data, Better Appointments
Logging data is only the start. MetaMood turns your entries into clear graphs and summaries.
When your psychiatrist or therapist asks how you have been since your last visit, you can show them real data. This leads to more focused conversations and better decisions.
Confidence in Your Care
I was often asked questions like: When did this start? Have you felt this before? Have you tried this medication?
Those questions strain memory, especially during episodes. MetaMood gives you answers you can trust. It helps you make informed decisions about your care with clarity and confidence.
You Do Not Have to Guess Anymore
MetaMood exists to give you clarity when things feel confusing, and support when things feel unstable. It helps you understand your patterns, communicate clearly with your care team, and take control of your mental health with confidence. You do not have to rely on memory or guesswork anymore.
